Sedation Dentistry in Fairchance

Fairchance Dental Arts will guide you through every step of your dental journey. Your dental process need not be a nerve-wracking mystery.

People often avoid dental work because they’re afraid of pain and the unknown. Some even find dental treatments physically difficult to complete, as they suffer from severe muscle tension or an overactive gag reflex.

We’ll answer every question you have about your treatment, and we offer conscious sedation dentistry. Sedation dentistry can help you feel calm and relaxed going in for a dental procedure.

What Is Conscious Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is one of the easiest and most effective ways to deal with many of the common causes of dental anxiety. Simply put, it is dental work done while you are medically relaxed.

You will not be unconscious. Conscious sedation relaxes your muscle tension, but it does not put you out. Nor does it replace anesthetics and other necessary parts of the treatment. It simply makes the treatment easier and more comfortable for you.

Why Choose Conscious Sedation?

There are many advantages to sedation dentistry for anxiety management when getting a dental treatment.

Shortened chair time | Sedation allows dental work to be completed in fewer sessions. This is more efficient for us and more convenient for you.

The anxiolytic effect | An anxiolytic actively reduces anxiety. Nitrous oxide has been used for this exact purpose since the late 1800s.

Speedy recovery time | The body can recover very efficiently from our sedative methods

Patient comfort | Conscious sedation keeps you feeling relaxed in the dental chair and with no pain during the treatment. Your total comfort is our priority.

What Types of Sedation Dentistry Are Available?

Oral Sedation

This is a pill administered orally at the time of treatment. These in-office sedatives will make you drowsy, but you’ll still be conscious and able to respond to your dentist. The oral sedative will help you be relaxed through your whole treatment with dramatically decreased anxiety.

A stronger alternative to the inhaled method, oral sedation is ideal for those who suffer from dental phobia and find themselves stressed before they even arrive at the office. Oral sedation relaxes and puts you at ease but you will still be conscious. Many patients describe the experience as trance-like, giving rise to the term “twilight dentistry.”

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Also called laughing gas, nitrous gas works much faster than an oral sedative. This gas is a light anesthetic that you inhale through a mask. Laughing gas will calm you but will still allow you to respond to your dentist. It provides patients with a sense of calm euphoria in the face of dental anxiety or fear.

Easily the most common form of sedation dentistry, the inhaled method uses a mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. Colloquially, this is referred to as “laughing gas” because some patients can feel the urge to giggle afterward.

The mask-style delivery system of inhaled sedation allows your dentist incredible control over the amount you receive and can be adjusted as needed. Better yet, it wears off quickly, allowing patients to drive themselves home after treatment.

Our Sedation Dentistry Process

The First Step: Consultation

At Fairchance Dental Arts, we understand that every smile is just as unique as the person who owns it! To ensure you get the results you want as comfortably as possible, a consultation is required so that we can discuss your expectations and answer any questions you may have.

During this discussion, we will have a few questions for you to help evaluate which sedation method suits your needs. This will include the treatments you are interested in, your recent medical history, and any medications you are currently taking.

Consider scheduling your risk-free consultation for further information!

Beginning Your Procedure

After consultation, you will arrive at the scheduled appointment. Depending on which sedation option was selected, this may differ.

If nitrous oxide is selected, you will be shown to our comfortable dental chair and then have the breathing apparatus gently placed so the laughing gas can take effect.

Oral sedation comes in pill form and is usually taken an hour before arriving at your appointment. Only after you are as comfortable and relaxed as possible will our compassionate dental professionals begin treatment.

Arranging Transportation as Needed

While our office is your home for optimized dental health, we are concerned with every aspect of your well-being. Arranging transportation to and from your appointment may be necessary when utilizing sedation dentistry.

For inhaled sedation, this is unlikely as the effects end rather quickly once the mask is removed. Our laughing gas is a great option for children who may experience dental anxiety!

Oral sedation is much stronger and is taken an hour before your appointment. You will need transportation to and from the office.

The Recovery Process

At Fairchance Dental Arts we are always incorporating the latest and greatest in dental technology for the most comprehensive and comfortable experience possible. Our sedation dentistry techniques are incredibly safe, so there isn’t much required for recovery.

Most patients who select the inhaled option simply need to wait 15-30 minutes after treatment to recover. Side effects are rare and minimal during this period, including grogginess and feeling a bit off balance.

Oral sedation can differ from person to person and requires 24 hours for a full recovery. The most persistent side effects are dizziness, dry mouth, and nausea.

Addressing the Common Concerns of Sedation Dentistry

As Fairchance’s favorite family practice, we know an informed patient is a comfortable one. That is why we’ve included the following section answering frequently asked questions relating to sedation dentistry.

If you would like additional information, contact our office or even schedule a consultation.

Are there risks to sedation dentistry?

The safety of you and your loved ones will always be our top priority, so enjoy peace of mind—our sedation dentistry techniques are very low-risk. Typically, the most intense side effects are dizziness, dry mouth, and nausea.

However, speaking with your general physician is always encouraged before receiving sedation or anesthesia to make sure it is safe for you. We will also review your medications during consultation.

Can children safely benefit from sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a fantastic solution for dental anxiety, which many children have. Our family practice offers safe sedation options, providing comfortable treatments for any age. The inhale method, commonly known as laughing gas, can be distributed and monitored in real-time by our specialist, ensuring your child’s well-being.

Oral sedation for children is safe while keeping the dose within the guidelines for your child’s weight and age. We can thoroughly discuss both options during consultation for peace of mind.

Should I consider sedation dentistry while pregnant?

Although sedation dentistry is incredibly safe, we do not recommend it for anyone who is pregnant; introducing any new medication during pregnancy may have adverse impacts on your or your baby’s health.

As stated above, your safety is our primary concern and we will always prioritize your well-being. If you or a loved one is pregnant and are interested in learning more about which dental treatments are available, contact our office.

What is recovery like?

Our sedation dentistry techniques are performed by dedicated professionals who have been specifically trained to administer them. As such, there is little to no recovery time.

For the inhaled method, most patients recover within 30 minutes after treatment. Oral sedation is more potent, requiring at least 24 hours for a full recovery.

When can I return to work or school?

Sedation dentistry itself does not require much in the means of recovery, therefore you will experience little disruption in your day-to-day routine.

Inhale sedation, or nitrous oxide, patients can drive themselves home afterward and can immediately return to work or class.

Because it is more potent, patients who take oral sedation should wait a full day before returning to normal activities.

Can I drive after sedation dentistry?

If you select the inhale method, you will be able to drive yourself to your appointment and need only to wait 30 minutes after treatment to drive home. This is due to the delivery method being much more fine-tuned.

Oral sedation has more potency, staying in your system longer. You will need to arrange transportation to your appointment and back home.

Are there dietary restrictions?

Sedation dentistry itself does not require any dietary restrictions; you can eat and drink immediately after your appointment. However, it should be noted that nausea is one of the few side effects patients report.

As with all of our procedures, we will provide post-treatment guidelines to help with your recovery. This will take into account sedation dentistry, anesthesia, and the treatment completed.

Is there any preparation required?

Aside from arranging transport for oral sedation, there isn’t much preparation needed, and you can live life as you normally do.

However, we do recommend that patients avoid eating from around midnight the night before their appointment until after the treatment is completed. A full stomach can contribute to a feeling of queasiness during treatment and nausea afterward.

What if I still feel sick?

Our sedation dentistry techniques have been streamlined to be as safe and comfortable as possible. If you are feeling ill after 24 hours or have worsening symptoms, contact your healthcare provider to make sure there are no complications.

Intense nausea, vomiting, or a fever over 101°F/38°C are signs you need to get in touch with your doctor. If you are experiencing any dental discomfort, contact our office immediately so we can provide assistance.
